Unraveling the Challenge of Ranking Legendary Squads

Ranking the best North American sports teams of all time is an exercise fraught with complexities and considerations. How can one justly compare squads from different sports and eras? The task requires not only a comprehensive understanding of the game but also an appreciation for the historical contexts in which these teams competed. In this endeavor, Bleacher Report's team of staffers undertook the monumental task of narrowing down nearly 200 teams before enlisting a panel of contributors to rank their top 99.

The rankings process was not arbitrary; to maintain fairness and accuracy, voters were instructed to evaluate teams based on their dominance within their respective leagues and eras. While the legendary 1927 New York Yankees would likely struggle against a modern powerhouse, their resounding superiority over their contemporaries is a testament to why they remain pivotal in the history of sports.

Factors such as strength of schedule, margin of victory per game, overall winning percentage, and the SRS from Sports Reference played a crucial role in determining the rankings. Additionally, the voters weighed reasons for one team's dominance being more impressive than another's, resulting in varied lists but a general consensus regarding the most exceptional teams boasting record-setting performances and generational talent.
