Devin Williams Joins New York Mets: Aiming for Redemption

Devin Williams Signs Three-Year Deal with New York Mets
After a challenging season with the New York Yankees in 2025, relief pitcher Devin Williams is looking to bounce back with his new team, the New York Mets. On Monday, Williams agreed to a three-year contract, marking a fresh start for the veteran pitcher.
Recent reports from ESPN's Jeff Passan and Jon Heyman of the New York Post reveal that Williams may step into the closer role, especially with Edwin Diaz currently a free agent. Whether or not he takes on the full-time closer duties, Williams will be a key part of a Mets bullpen that features A.J. Minter, Adbert Alzolay, and Brooks Raley.
2025 Season Struggles
Williams had a tumultuous season in 2025, making 67 appearances for the Yankees and finishing with a career-worst 4.79 ERA. He recorded only 18 saves, a 4-6 win-loss record, and 90 strikeouts across 62.0 innings pitched. His struggles led to two demotions from the closer role throughout the season. Williams initially lost his job to Luke Weaver and was later removed again after the Yankees traded for closer David Bednar.
Despite his difficulties, Williams did shine in the postseason, not allowing any runs in four appearances. He was once celebrated as one of MLB's top closers, earning the title of NL Reliever of the Year twice (2020, 2023) and making back-to-back All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023.
A Chance for Redemption
Williams' previous tenure with the Milwaukee Brewers also ended on a sour note, as he struggled in a pivotal Wild Card Game against the New York Mets, surrendering four runs in the ninth inning that led to the Brewers' playoff exit.
Now, with the Mets hoping for a revival of his previous form, Williams has the opportunity to become a vital component in their pursuit of a playoff spot in 2026. The Mets believe that with a fresh start, Williams can once again be the reliable reliever they need.
